Dr. Tam Visit

The School of the Nations was delighted to host a visit by Dr. Alexis Tam, Secretary of Social Affairs and Culture for the Macau Special Administrative Region on 18 April 2017. Dr. Tam was accompanied by Madame Leong Lai, Director of the Macau Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ); Mr. Wai Cheng Iong, Advisor of Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture ;  Mr. Lou Pak Sang, Subdirector of DSEJ; Madame Kuok Sio Lai, Subdirector of DSEJ; Ms. Leong Vai Kei, Director of Department of Education of DSEJ; Mr. Wong Kin Mou, Director of Department of Research and Educational Resources of DSEJ; Mr. Kong Chi Meng, Director of Division of Pre-school and Primary Education of DSEJ.

Dr. Tam and his colleagues met with the School of the Nations Council, School Director and Administrative Team. Ms. Candy Fok Kam Mui welcomed Dr. Tam and the guests from the DSEJ on behalf of the School Council and expressed the Council’s appreciation for the extensive support the government of Macau has provided to the school since its inception nearly 30 years ago. Dr. Tam then shared that he was pleased to pay a visit to the School for his second time, noting that the School had made a lot of progress over the years in its efforts to contribute to the welfare of Macau.  Dr. Tam commented on the importance of students developing their capacities in the Mandarin language and using their talents to contribute to their community, society, and nation.  School of the Nations Director Mr. Vivek Nair also expressed his deep appreciation of the assistance the government had provided to help the school advance towards its vision of developing the great capacity of young people to contribute to the well-being of society, noting that the School regards every human being “as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value” and that education is the process by which this potential can be released.

Following further discussion, the group visited the School’s arts department, during which time Dr. Tam and his colleagues had a chance to meet with students and discuss with them their artwork and the concepts they were based on.  The visitors then proceeded to visit and discuss the School’s International Baccalaureate Program, including visits with students undertaking experiments in the Biology and Physics labs.  Finally, Dr. Tam had a chance to address the School’s graduating class, during which he inquired about their plans for future study and encouraged them to strive for excellence.

The School of the Nations community was very encouraged by the visit and looks forward to continuing to serve the community of Macau under the guidance of the Department of Social Affairs and Culture and DSEJ.

Aim for Active

From May 30 to June 3 students, parents and staff of School of the Nations are invited to work cooperatively to meet the goal of personal wellness in our Aim for Active week.  We hope that the entire school community will focus on increasing minutes of physical activity and making positive changes for a healthy, balanced life.

At School of the Nations, we are now fundraising so that we can install air conditioning into our school gymnasium.  If you or someone you know would like to make a donation to this cause, please speak to Reception.  We are hosting a number of fundraisers during Aim for Active to promote this awareness. Primary students are selling healthy snacks at recess and the Teacher Challenge fundraiser is open to students in P4 and up where we hope to have some fun competition between staff and students.

Students are highly encouraged to participate and represent their colour house team in activities during recess and after school.  Parents are welcome to join in or support students on the side.  Ultimately, it is a week to increase activity, think about overall health and try to make small positive changes for wellness. Please join in!

This competition required students to write a literary response to a selected book chosen by themselves. There were a total of 444 entries from 28 schools of which 20 students received awards. Three of our students were awarded honorary awards; the largest number of SON students since we began to participate in 2012. Kaylum Leong shortlisted for the Hong Kong Young Writers Award 2016

We are thrilled to announce that Kaylum Leong of P3 has been shortlisted for the Hong Kong Young Writers Award 2016.

?

Please take a look at his award winning poem!

The Terracotta Warriors

The terracotta warriors,

Standing straight and tall.

The terracotta warriors,

Standing five feet tall.

The terracotta warriors,

Not moving an inch.

The terracotta warriors,

I won’t even give them a pinch.

The terracotta warriors,

Ready for war.

The terracotta warriors,

I hope they don’t snore!

The terracotta warriors,

Do they each shave?

The terracotta warriors,

Built to guard a grave.

The terracotta warriors,

Do they brush their teeth?

The terracotta warriors,

I hope they each have a sheath.

The terracotta warriors,

Never dying guys,

The terracotta warriors,

Do they wear ties?

The terracotta warriors,

What exactly do they do?

The terracotta warriors,

Do they each wear one shoe?!?

The terracotta warriors,

They’re really tough and strong,

The terracotta warriors,

Do they like to sing songs?

The terracotta warriors,

Do they drink wine?

The terracotta warriors,

Are they like Einstein?

The terracotta warriors,

Made of sharp steel.

The terracotta warriors,

Wriggly as an eel.

THE END
